6 Highlights From Wild on Wounds’ BUZZ Report You Don’t Want to Miss

Published on October 28, 2020 by Carole Jakucs, MSN, RN, PHN, CDCES

If you missed our virtual Wild on Wounds Conference (WOW) 2020 and the much-loved WOW BUZZ Report – there’s always next year.

In the meantime, we spoke with Nancy Morgan, RN, BSN, MBA, WOC, DWC, OMS, co-founder of the Wound Care Education Institute (WCEI) and WOW.

She shared six of the many game-changing wound care products featured in this year’s Buzz Report that came out this past year.

In case you’re not familiar with the BUZZ Report, it’s always discussed during the first session each day of every WOW conference. It provides you with an easy way to stay current on the latest wound care trends and best practices.

“This is when WOW attendees spend their first hours with us,” Morgan said. “We talk about new announcements, new products, new guidelines, new APPs and new research in wound care. It’s the most popular session of WOW.”

It’s important for wound clinicians to stay up to date on new standards of care and new products, Morgan said.

“You don’t want to get in a rut by using the same products and practice the same way, over-and-over again just because that’s how it’s always been done,” she said. “You’re not helping your patients when you do this.”

Morgan provides some product highlights from this year’s BUZZ Report below.

1. Eclypse

The Eclypse Boot SAP Dressing by MediUSA is a boot/dressing product to use when moderate to heavily exudative wounds are present on the lower leg. The boot also can be used under compression therapy garments or wraps.

The Eclypse boot has highly absorbent capabilities (up to 1 gallon) and comes in three sizes:

  • Small absorbs half gallon (63.49 ounces) and is 22 x 19 inches
  • Large absorbs approximately three-quarter gallon (102.29 ounces) and is 24 x 28 inches
  • X-Large absorbs 1 gallon (134.04 ounces) and is 28 x 31 inches

2. Polymem

Polymeric Membrane Dressings were mentioned in the new NPIAP guidelines in November 2019.

“It does more than just foam — it is now in its own subcategory,” Morgan said.

Some key features of Polymem:

  • Consists of a hydrophilic, polyurethane matrix
  • Includes a cleanser, superabsorbent and moisturizer in the dressing
  • Performs multiple actions: It cleanses, moistens, absorbs, fills, and protects

How it works:

Wound cleanser and glycerin from Polymem are released into the wound bed. The wound cleanser reduces the need for manual and often painful wound bed cleansing.

The moisturizer keeps the dressing from adhering to the wound bed, which also helps to reduce pain.

Polymem is the first dressing type shown to help dissipate excess heat. This is important as trapped heat under dressings increases the metabolic demand of tissues and increases the risk for tissue damage, Morgan said.

3. Sorbact Technology

Known as Cutimed, Sorbact, Hydroactive B by BSN Medical, this product is a four-in-one dressing – it absorbs, hydrates, debrides, and is an antimicrobial.

“[Sorbact has] a large line of products with green netting,” Morgan said. “The green netting material acts like a magnet. The bacteria stick to it and are removed and killed in the material.”

Some key features:

  • Absorbs and locks wound exudate in the hydro-polymer gel core
  • Maintains a moist wound environment
  • Can remain in place for up to four days
  • May use with compression therapy

These products can be used for contaminated, colonized or infected, exudative, or chronic wounds.

Some examples include:

  • Venous and arterial ulcers
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Pressure injuries
  • Postoperative dehisced wounds
  • Traumatic wounds

4. Anasept Antimicrobial Wound Irrigation Solution

Anasept by Anacapa Technologies is a solution that can kill bacteria in seconds, Morgan said.

Some of the organisms Anasept is effective against include MRSA, VRE, and CRE.

Product features:

  • Clear, isotonic liquid
  • Broad-spectrum antimicrobial
  • 0.057% sodium hypochlorite
  • Easy-to-use, spike-able container
  • Easy-to-attach hanger to an IV pole or NPWT
  • Used for NPWT with instillation or infusion capability

5. Debrisoft

Morgan described Debrisoft, by Lohmann and Rauscher, as a monofilament single-sided, fiber pad made up of millions of fibers. It’s a debridement and skin cleaning product.

“It mechanically cleans wounds by removing slough and dead tissue. You moisten the Debrisoft pad and then clean the wound with it,” Morgan said.

Additional features:

  • Soft polyester fibers
  • 10 x 10 centimeter pad contains 18 million fibers
  • Loosens debris
  • Absorbs dead skin flakes and keratosis
  • Gentle and soft
  • Does not cause pain
  • No harm to granulation tissue and epithelial cells

6. Granulotion

Granulotion by GL Health Inc. is an over-the-counter medicated lotion designed to support healing of excessive granulation tissue. According to Morgan, it’s an alternative to silver nitrate and steroids.

It can help shrink tissues that develop at gastrostomy, jejunostomy, tracheostomy, ileostomy, and colostomy sites.

“It was developed by a nurse, Christopher R. Speaker, APN, FNP-BC, and is simple and easy to use,” Morgan said.

Key features:

  • Soothes
  • Shrinks
  • Cleans and has anti-microbial properties
  • Protects skin using zinc oxide, beta glucan, and vitamin E
  • Contains tube-friendly ingredients for safe application near silicone tubes
